Cardian Matsu It almost kind of feels gutturally unfair to look at the release date on this album and only seeing it pick back up in attention this late.

There’s notes of synth pop, new wave, and all of the other trappings of the era RIK was composing this in, all given a unique spin through by being presented by themselves as instrumentals.

The title track is probably my favorite out of the bunch, but the crossover of riffs and motifs between tracks makes this feel like such a complete passion project. Favorite track: Matter Of Time.

Dream Chimney is excited to announce the official re-release of the 1989 instrumental synth pop album “Matter of Time” by RIK.

We found the album originally from a discogs listing with a brief and mysterious description from an owner as "lo-fi balearic synth instrumentals". After hearing the tracks (which completely lived up to the description!) we were hooked. The album has everything we were hoping for. A full array of instrumental synth gems with catchy pop melodies, dreamy balearic hooks, and heartbreaking, italo-styled keyboards. Later we decided to post a track from this seemingly unknown album on our social channels. Soon after that it caught the attention of the artist himself!

The album was originally recorded in 1989 at RIK’s home studio in Oakland, CA with two synthesizers, a drum machine, Reverb unit, sequencer and cassette recorder. Self released on cassette only, they were sold in record stores, local shops and even from a booth at the Folsom Street Fair. The tapes were played out in local bars / nightclubs and at the time often spotted throughout the Bay Area.

Finding an amazing instrumental synth pop album, recorded over 30 years ago that is so perfectly suited for Dream Chimney… it was only a “matter of time”. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
